not too many people can pull of an unscripted promo... you' mentioned austin and bret but these guys are legendary.  the young stars of today can't cut it with the exception of punk & miz.

The Rock was probably the best at carrying on an unscripted promo!  However, it's hard to believe in a guy to carry a promo when he doesn't really have a good gimmick with him.  CM punk is good at promos because he has a character that you can really believe in.   Same with Steve Austin... he just started talking about being the world's toughest SOB and the rest came from that...   More freedom must be granted to the wrestlers, especially the younger stars... to give unscripted promos, because this is an important part of how they become main event guys!

as all of you have said, all of the old-school wrestlers have cut amazing unscripted promo's becasue back in those days that is what you would do. It wasn't so predictable and you could never know what they were going to say. Nowadays we have promos that are abut the exact same topic completed by a few wrestlers during that week. Stale. But then agian to cut a promo unscripted is a skill in itelf and it is nowhere near easy to do. Again if you give the mic to a young star and say ere talk about random sh## for 10 minutes, they wont know what to do. That is because everything is always so scripted they have never had that experiecne and being on the main roster and choking on your first promo would be bad. The only young guy I can think who could do it is The Miz who did a really amazing promo a few weeks past on Raw.

i agree to a point.... the old guys could cut great promos but ti was a different time.. when it wasnt PG and u could get away with alot more....
now that its all PG its to risky to let wrestling out there to say what they think....
now its Piant By Numbers Wrestling Edition....

ok, i get your points about younger talent possibly choking with no script or saying the wrong thing, and i accept this point. I totally agree that the Miz definitely has what it takes from a promo point of view.... (On a side note... i wonder whether in the long run, Morrisson will actually be the "jannetty?"!!!)

But I don't think guys as experienced as DX who have been in the business for years should be diminished by restricting themselves to a script - but that comes with being PG DX which is part of the problem.

Anyway i think certain tried and trusted talent should be allowed more freedom, and once obvious talent like Miz have been spotted, they too should be able to gradually get more freedom. I bet most of the locker room are itching for more freedom to express themselves.

The writers by scripting the promos for the talent, are indicating that they know more about their gimmicks than the talent themselves. should this be the case?

Anyway, more freedom for the guys that can obviously handle it.... i think that's a fair compromise.
