I am not quite sure if it is going to happen at WrestleMania, but I agree that it needs to happen and soon. Randy Orton is much better as a heel, and WWE needs some strong heels right now.

A good way to determine if someone is better as a face or a heel is to picture what their best work was. Orton's best work by far is his feud with HHH and the McMahon's as the leader of Legacy.

Look at Edge. Good as a face but outstanding as a heel. When he cashed in his briefcase and became the ultimate opportunist, time and time again, those were his standout moments.

However take John Cena. He was quite a good heel early in his career, but he is a face and his best work is standing up against injustice... vs Orton, vs Nexus, vs Big Show etc. He is also needed as a face as he sells merch like nobody else to all the kids and makes millions for McMahon.

Now it is probably fair to say that for most superstars who have been both a face and a heel in their careers, their work as a heel stands out more.

And I would imagine that 90% of the roster would prefer to be heels if given the chance. It seems to me as if it would be far easier to do, and much more fun.

But for a lot of superstars, if their work as a heel doesn't stand out, then they should be faces. Del Rio has correctly turned face. Ziggler turning face is only a matter of time - I see it happening in maybe 1 year.

Orton's work as a heel DID STAND OUT. It was excellent.

Orton has been stale as a face ever since his feud with Christian, almost two years ago, only a few months after his face turn. WWE should have realised it was not working and turned him back heel again but they did not.

Contrast that with Edge. When he came back and won the rumble and feuded with Jericho, chanting Spear Spear Spear, WWE realised this wasn't working and quickly turned him heel again after Mania.

They should do the same with Orton.

WWE have quite a few marketable faces now in Cena, Sheamus, Ryback, Del Rio etc. WWE no longer need Orton as a face.

Lets look at the heels going into Mania: Punk, Lesnar, Swagger, Shield, Henry, Show (on a face team). Ziggy (in an undercard match). Punk is great. Lesnar is part time. WWE have killed the momentum of Ziggy and Show. Swagger will job to everyone after Mania. Henry has injury issues. There is room for another main event heel in Orton.

Let the man do what he's good at.

Someone above has argued something along the lines of: "A heel Orton is the same as a face Orton, except that the heel Orton feuded with faces." That is a reasonable argument, to a point.

It is definitely true of his face turn. He was such a great heel and bullied his legacy stablemates for a year, to the extent that the audience disliked the lack of backbone from Ted and Cody, and started cheering for Orton instead. So Orton did not need to change his gimmick to become a face. The change in the audience's reaction to Orton is what made him a face.

Lets look at the current scenario. Orton has become stale as a face. But the fans do not boo him. They still cheer for him. In this case, Orton will not be turned heel by any change in audience reaction. He will have to change his gimmick to be a heel, and by changing his gimmick it will mean that face Orton <> heel Orton.
